Augusta Police Headquarters

Location

Augusta, ME

Project Type

Law Enforcement

The City of Augusta, Maine is constructing a new 23,000 SF police station on a potential downtown site. The sloped sites lowest level resides within the flood plain, so the station is built into a hillside over a new secure parking garage and sally port. The building will be a composite of steel and concrete construction, with a masonry veneer and flat roof, and is anticipated to be hardened construction because of the nature of the site and available standoff distances. The station will include a public lobby, administrative offices, criminal investigations division, patrol and patrol support areas, evidence processing, and operations. The public lobby offers a records clerk, duty desk, toilet rooms, and a discreet CRO office. The operations and administration areas contain offices, workrooms, storage, and archives, while the dispatch, comms, and support areas in close proximity. The patrol area is secure from the main corridors, and the evidence processing lab and support spaces are fully contained within the secure area. A sally port and booking area immediately adjacent to patrol offers secure detainee transfer between spaces. The support spaces, like lockers, showers, bunks, and fitness are grouped with the armory in close proximity to the patrol area. The station will serve as a replacement for an abandoned building and will set a precedent of public safety in this portion of downtown Augusta.
