Hallowell Police Department
In 2021, MW Studios and Artifex A/E, collectively embarked on a journey to breathe new life into the historic fabric of the City of Hallowell, Maine. We took on the challenge of designing a state-of-the-art police station by adapting a fire station constructed in 1828. The approach entailed a comprehensive assessment of existing building conditions, needs assessment, program development, and schematic design services. Our mission was twofold: to modernize the facility and make it fit for the evolving needs of the police department while preserving the cherished historic character of the building. The result is a remarkable adaptive reuse project that seamlessly blends the old and the new, offering a space encompassing patrol areas, holding cells, evidence processing and storage, administrative offices, and inviting community spaces in one harmonious setting. The design not only fulfills the operational needs of the City of Hallowell’s police department but also celebrates the rich history of the community.
