Sparrows Point Park & Rec Center
The Sparrows Point Recreation Center and Park is a new 16,000 SF facility to serve the recreational needs of Baltimore County residents. The historic and well-known Bethlehem Steel location was donated to the County to transform the brown field site into a public community center that overlooks the water of Sparrows Point. The 21-acre waterfront site will have a synthetic multi-use turf sports field with boasting LED lighting, scenic walking trails, and an accessible canoe/kayak launch area. There will be an inclusive ADA-accessible boardwalk pier that can be used for fishing and observing the natural surroundings and wildlife. A 10,000 square foot children’s playground will also be included for community users. The 16,000 SF building consists of a double-court gymnasium, multiple activity rooms, and concession services for the athletic fields. Sustainable design features include an array of photovoltaic panels on the roof, 6 Level 2 and 1 Level 3 EV chargers, low-flow fixtures, and eco-friendly building materials. MWS also performed a feasibility and concept study as part of the initial design process. The park and project are aiming for LEED Platinum certification.
