PROJECT BRIEF

The New Brunswick New Jersey Fire Department solicited the services of Manns Woodward Studios to design and document a two story, 42,500 SF Fire Department Headquarters to replace their current headquarters in downtown New Brunswick. The program consists of (4) double-deep apparatus bays, a 60 person lecture auditorium, 120 person community meeting room, 5,400 SF of fire prevention offices, 2,000 SF emergency operations substation, 4,000 SF of fire administration offices, 500 SF fitness center, 14 live-in bunk rooms, and a 1,500 SF kitchen/dayroom.
The biggest design challenge resided within the site restrictions that were created due to the dense urban setting that encompasses the whole of the site. Apparatus turning radius, proximity to major response thoroughfares, response apron security, and clear separation of public entrance vs. fire department entrance were all factors that dictated site and building correlation.
